As far as I can tell for nothing important. So far today, his wife has called 3 times, 1 son 3 times, another son once. I always answer the phone, sometime waiting until the 2nd or 3rd ring when I can see on caller id it's one of them. He doesn't answer the phone & leaves it up to me. Why is this do you think when he can also see the same caller id??

You don't say what your job title is, but since he's the "boss", he likely feels it's in your job description to answer the phone, even if he knows it's for him. I know how annoying this can be- I've had a similar situation in the past, and it was a co-worker, not a boss, who had the unlimited calls from family members every day, with the expectation that I answer the phone. Luckily we got voice mail and I refused to pick up the phone if they tried to bypass that. Unfortunately, as the underling, you may just have to grin and bear it....... since he apparently is pulling a boss move on you.

Since you both have caller ID, you'll know instantly that the call is for your boss. The next time it rings, glance at the caller ID, and ask your boss to pick it up since it's for him. ("That one's yours" - "I'll let you get that." Easy going phrases that don't sound critical of the caller)
Also you might consider turning the ringer down on your phone, this will make his phone sound louder. You might consider an IPOD while you are both sitting at your desks, putting your phone in your line of vision. You'll be tuning out your bosses' personal conversation as well as not being the receptionist-on-duty.
Delicate situation, be professional, be polite and be adult.
