The squirrels are enslaved by a passion for nuts. This spiritually manifests itself in all their actions. Because of this malady, God has ordained that they should live in fear of cats and dogs who would devour them. Here, however, the curse grows inconsistent, for they serve as a curse for men as well. For the cat will only come to men on its terms and offer love only for food. The dogs like to crap on your floor and eat your newspaper.

The squirrel, thus, is distinct among all animals. For by instilling in it this spiritual passion, God has given it a property for the purpose of humbling human arrogance.

Spiritually all animals are not the same. Some have evolved more and therefore are higher on the food chain. Squirrels aren't at the top ... but they're "up there!"
