Depends a bit on the input material, but fluid-bed reactors are making some real headway in biofuels (you don't mention your application). They seem to have real potential for "local" biomass -> bio-fuel conversion. That's the style of reactor that the USDA was recently using in their pilot experiment to convert switchgrass to fuel, BTW.
