Yes - depending on how far along she is.

Early during the pregnancy, your veterinarian can perform what is called a "spay termination". This will abort the babies and spay your dog so that she cannot have any other puppies in the future.

Do you think she's pregnant? I don't know how many pups a shih tzu can give birth to at a time, but I wonder what you'd do if she has 8 babies? That's 8 more babies without homes if you cannot keep them - or 8 more homes lost to dogs who are already alive and in desperate need of homes.

It's a very difficult decision for many. Being involved in animal rescue, and knowing so many creatures live a long time in desperate situations - and euthanized just because there is "no space" - I've actually reached a point where I consider spaying pregnant animals very humane. If there are actual "babies", they are euthanized humanely, immediately (at least, by the vets I know - I can't speak to the practices of every vet out there), and never know anything but the warmth of their mother before their forever sleep.

If the babies were old enough to survive at the time of spaying, you'd need to find another mother to nurse them. Otherwise, they'd die of starvation.

Usually the veterinarian removes the entire uterus where your shih tzu's unborn litter is nesting until it is time for it to give birth. In that case, you are terminating your canine's pregnancy..a.k.a. abortion. But maybe if you request your veterinarian to remove a piece of the uterus which will render the pet to be infertile after it has giving birth but it is probable that this might cause either some or all of the litter to die regardless, health problems, complications in conceiving her children, birth defects in some or all of the puppies, or terrible health conditions that the puppies may acquire due to the neutering. Um spaying is for male dogs. If not, the only alternative would be to wait until after the litter has been born to conduct the neutering procedure. But if I were you, make sure that your shih tzu without a doubt is indeed pregnant in order to get those potentially deceiving pregnancy symptoms substantiated by a veterinarian. If X-ray tests confirm from a veterinarian that she is not pregnant, get her neutered right away because there's no telling when she'll mate with her male counterpart. Many dogs bear unwanted litters, don't increase the overcrowded population of neglected, wild and dogs looking for a place to call home despite the fact that the majority of people don't want them due to factors in regards to money!

Yes, spaying will kill the babies. It is the most common method of abortion in dogs and cats (chemical abortion is only possible in early stages of pregnancy, i.e before she starts to show).

Is she definitely pregnant? If she's not showing yet, spaying may still be OK, unless you want to look into the chemical form which is of course less invasive, although it does have side-effects.

If you decide to keep the puppies, do consult a vet and do plenty of research so you know what to expect!

Yes, spaying her while pregnant will kill the puppies. This actually happens more often than one would think. Decide if you want puppies and can find homes for them. If not, talk to the vet. If she is too far along, they delay the surgery for the sake of the pet.

My brother waited and now has six mixed breed miniature puppies that he hasn't been able to rehome. He's working with a shelter to find homes for half of them and everybody is being fixed in the meantime.

Are you kidding?
If you were pregnant and got a hysterectomy, would it kill the baby?
The best bet is do not breed. Once bred there is a harmonal shot that will abort the litter. then have her spayed so it never happens again.
Or whelp her out and save her health. Find good homes for the pups and ask for spay nuter agreements from buyers/adopties.

Um...do you know where babies come from? Removing a uterus will certainly kill the babies, where else do you think they'd grow before they're born. Wow. To bad community rules say I need to be polite, because I have a few things to say about your intelligence...and suitablility as a pet owner!

Yes, it will. Wait until after she's had the puppies to have her spayed, make sure the vet's aware she was recently pregnant.

Unfortunately when they spay an animal they usually remove their uterus, which is where the babies are located. So they would have to abort them unless you wait until after the puppies are born.
