Yesterday in the mail I received a document stating that several of the VW models including mine have a factory defect in the brake light. I was wondering if anyone had this problem yet? I havent had it, but I'm not sure if I need to find a VW dealer and have them replace it even though it still functions correct.

It stated in the letter VW will replace these for free at any VW dealer..

Yes, there is a recall on brake light switch for many models. including the Golfs. Premature failure has been observed by the factory, hence the recall. Such failures will most times prevent shifting from P to any gear position (auto drives) and with manual drives, your gear lever will shift alright but you could have MIL (malfunction indicator light) on most times, as the brake light switch form part of the sensors on the car. The brake lights could also remain permananetly lit, which could discharge your battery in the longterm, if unnoticed. The best is to repond quickly to the recall and have it done for you in a nearby dealership. It takes less than 30 mins to fix the switch.

I didn't get the letter, but I read about it in the paper when they announced it in Feb. I went and got mine fixed. It took about 1 hour and it was completly free. I would get it fixed though, because if you don't and it goes out, you might have to get the car towed to the dealership.
I got it fixed march 2, so that might be why I never got the letter.

Yes, the brake light switch can easily break.

This will either prevent you from shifting your car out of par and your brake lights will constantly be on, or your brake lights won't turn on at all!!!!

Get it replaced ASAP.
