Yes, we ARE a "nation of immigrants." You can't deny that. Do we NEED immigrants to retain our identity? No, I don't think so but as long as they're legal, I don't have a problem with them.

It's a nation /founded/ by immigrants, certainly, and most Americans have some immigrant heritage, but no, it's not a nation /of immigrants/ - it's a nation of people, of citizens, some of whom are immigrants, most of whom are descended from immigrants.

You would only refer to America as a "nation of immigrants" if you believe that people should be judged by thier ancestry - there's a word for that sort of belief, BTW, though it's usually mis-aplied to those who oppose illegal immigration.

The US certainly needs immigration, to bolster it's population and bring in needed job skills. In order to retain it's cultural identity, the US also needs to bring in immigrants from around the world, rather than a disproportionate number from a given nation or region.

Legal immigration is meant to do that - to allow people from many different countries to come here in beneficial numbers. Currently, IMHO, the number of legal immigrants allowed into the country is too low.

Yes and no. I do believe that America is a "nation of immigrants." If you are not a Native American, then you are 100% the descendent of immigrants. I do not necessarily agree that we NEED immigrants to retain our identity, though we don't need to be immigrant-free, either. We'll retain our identity regardless of what we do... it will just be a different identity. Identity changes, regardless, so ultimately it is a moot issue.

- America is a nation of immigrants. That is no doubt about it. There are not that many people in US can claim themselves as native American Indian.

- Do US still need immigrants? Yes.. Every country needs... In fact, every country has some way to allow foreigner to immigrate into their countries. US citizen also immigrates to other countries as well. Of course, US is good comparing with others. More people come in than get out.

Immigration by jobs and investment are actually given great benefit to the country. (You don't pay for that person's education, and you got an extra tax payer. If you can use the job to apply for immigration, usually that require a higher education. )

Immigration by relative... There is a human rights issue involved. As US wants to keep his good reputation internationally. It is something necessary. And if you can someone really close to you and much poorer than you who live outside of the country, you may have to send money to him/her. It builds the capital away from the country too.

Even illegal immigrants gives some sort of comtribution to the US. Most ii come here to work, and they take a job lower pay than normal salary. If there is absolutely no ii in the country. Will you take the job as ii used to work on with the same pay? I guess no one will do it. If the company has to pay more to get the job done, the cost will eventually pass back to the consumer. or they will shop the entire business to another country. We will need to pay for the cost to drive those ii out... (This is how the current situation ends up. People don't want inflation and pay the cost to drive ii out.)

The best thing is that ii works here, pays tax, and get no benefits... but things won't work that perfect.

I do believe that we are a nation of immigrants. I believe that even the Native American Indians migrated from Europe across the connecting ice field of what is now Alaska and the northern part of USSR. This evolving immigrating process has benefited our country for centuries. It is very much like how our own skin as it regenerates day by day. Can you imagine what you would be like if your skin was the same skin that you were born with? I slight paper cut or sun burn could be deadly. We renew. We grow. Our country does the same.

Look at the history of our country. The only reason you are here is because someone in your family, at some point, immigrated. We wouldn't be who we are today without immigration, so no, we certainly should not shut our doors to legal immigrants.
