The FBI is police (read: fighting crime) on federal level.
The CIA task is to inform the President (and indirectly other government departments including the police). The CIA cannot work within the US homeland.
The CIA does not do police work, not even outside US borders however they might have assisted some local police or done things that have helped the police (including DEA)

The FBI operates as the national police force and investigates crimes against federal statutes in the United States. The FBI handles all robberies of federal banks. The CIA is the nation's spy agency. They collect information on potential threats to the US or it's citizens. The CIA works all over the world. The CIA does not handle crime investigations.

The CIA is a true intelligence agency limited to foreign intelligence. The FBI is not really an intelligence agency, it is more of a law enforcement agency. It has primary jurisdiction for counter-intelligence. It has a gang/organized crime intelligence division. It is firmly connected to the DEA which operates EPIC and drug intelligence. It shares jurisdiction with DHS over domestic terrorism. But although it has an agent in every embassy, their function is not foreign intelligence, but law enforcement liaison.
