The reason for so many different religions is basically each different society has independently developed a need to understand the world in which in they have lived. With the rise of science many people choose to believe in that rather than an accepted religion. Ironically science becomes their "religion", so to speak.

Most religions - even the polytheistic ones, like the Egyptians - eventually grew to believe in the one god. All religions have their own myths and legends, their own doctrines.

Many follow similar themes - virgin birth being a concept repeated in several different religions. Of the modern religions most are subdivided into different categories, where people have shaped the religion to fit their own ideologies.

Almost all religions today claim to be the "true" faith. In the end it is up to you what you believe in, or if you believe in anything at all.

There is no "right" religion. There are many arguements on this site every day about religion - but in the end it all boils down to what you believe in personally.

Henry XIII is a good place to start as to why there are so many different religions, new ones are formed to give power where old ones do not provide that power/control. Ideas that are different and are explained through different religious teachings may not overtly be to gain control but once there are followers this "voluntary coercion" is inevitable and when people lay claim that religious ideas should be adhered to and set themselves up as masters of doctrine (priests etc), so control is gained and power over others adopted.

To suggest there is a 'right one' indicates that all others are 'wrong' in some way. As that applies irrespective of which one you think is the right one you have your answer, that they are all the right one if you believe in it and with elegant inevitably they are all the wrong ones if you don't.

Hedge your bets and live a responsible life, taking responsibility for your own actions instead.

If there is an afterlife you will presumably be judged on your actions not whether you wore the correct T shirt.

The reason there are so many different religions is that people have such a hard time agreeing on one thing. For example: there are so many different kinds of governments worldwide because everyone has their own ideas. Now to answer which one is right: I went to a religious class once and heard this story....

Several young men once searched together through the scriptures and listed 17 specific points for finding the "true" church. They went their separate ways, and years later they met and discovered that they had each independently found and joined the one church that met their criteria –

The 17 points they got from the bible were:
1.Christ organized the Church (Eph 4:11-14)
2.The true church must bear the name of Jesus Christ (Eph 5:23)
3.The true church must have a foundation of Apostles and
Prophets (Eph 2:19-20)
4.The true church must have the same organization as Christ's Church (Eph 4:11-14)
5.The true church must claim divine authority (Heb 5:4-10)
6.The true church must have no paid ministry (1 Cor 9:16-18; Acts 20:33-34; John 10:11-13)
7.The true church must baptise by immersion (Matt 3:13-16)
8.The true church must bestow the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands (Acts 8:14-17)
9.The true church must practice divine healing (Mark 3:14-15)
10.The true church must teach that God and Jesus are seperate and distinct individuals (John 17:11; 20:17)
11.The true church must teach that God and Jesus have bodies of flesh and bone (Luke 23:36-39; Acts 1:9-11; Heb 1:1-3)
12.The officers must be called by God (Heb 4:4; Ex 28:1; 40:13-16)
13The true church must claim revelation from God (Amos 3:7)
14.The true church must be a missionary church (Matt 28:19-20)
15.The true church must be a restored church (Acts 3:19-20)
16The true church must practice baptism for the dead (1Cor :16&29)
17."By their fruits ye shall know them." (Matt 7:20)

The only church they all found that practiced each of these points was the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints(Mormom church). I hope that information was of some help. After hearing that story, I am going to look into the Mormon faith.

There is NO one right religion.
The reason why there are so many different ones is because they are regional. The god that Abraham followed was supposed to only be regional, but it got way out of hand and forced too many to convert.
Every country, county, culture had, and some still do have, their own Gods and Goddesses, their own religion and for them that is the true religion, but no one religion is true for everyone.

There are so many religions because of us. We all have different opinions and we all have free agency to act on those opinions. In the beginning there was one religion. Satan immediately intervened and started mixing philosophies of men with scripture to cleverly confuse us and make it hard to tell which religion is right. Only the Holy Ghost can tell you which is the one true religion.
I searched and came to know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the restored church that existed in the beginning.

You will have to research and find for yourself though, you cannot live off of someone else's testimony of a religion.

I don't believe that you are going to get an honest answer to that question by simply asking a vast community of internet users representing a wide variety of faiths (or lack thereof.) The best thing to do is simply start studying for yourself, and then ask God directly.

After saying that, it may seem odd that I would refer you to a Christian text (the Bible,) when I point you to the New Testament, James 1:5, "If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him."

First, we haven't even established that Christianity may be the correct religion, and yet, I'm pointing you to a Christian text... However, I believe there is true logic there: If there is a God who is an omniscient, omnipotent being, then it only makes sense that he would prepare a way for you to receive an answer to your most important questions.

So, search, ponder, and ask God through prayer. I would rely on that approach more than I would on the random comments of us Y!A lurkers.

I think I'd follow the one who tells about himself in the bible. He Created and is the only one who can. He loved enough to send his only begotten son to a world that hated him. And as a down payment for a future time gave Holy Spirit, for us to use now. He is the only one who tell us about himself in the bible.
Also the false God would like nothing more than to keep you from believing on the only true god, thats why there are so many different ones.

The fact is Jesus Christ "is the way, the truth, the life." With that, just because a person is a Christian doesn't mean life is automatically going to be simple and great all the time, but it does provide a basis to be content and deal with obstacles. There are many historical finds and facts that support Chrisitanity, unlike many other religions. People want to know there is more to life than just the every day. Thanks!

How serious are you in asking this question, Amber?
The religions you see and hear all around, all saying that they're the only true one, well, with them it doesn't matter which you choose. Pick whichever you fancy.
But at the heart of each one, usually keeping pretty quiet, usually in the care of monks and nuns, there is Truth. And the wierd thing is that, at the heart of them, they all agree on just what that Truth is.
And if you are serious in your question, then that's where you need to look.
