Should legal permanent resident immigrants residing in the U.S for over 40 years who have worked, paid taxes, obeyed all laws, and who are upstanding contributing community members be granted automatic citizenship if they so desire it?

What do you mean "automatic?" It's almost automatic now. They file the paperwork, get interviewed, take a test most 9th graders could pass, swear in and pledge allegiance. It's almost painless.

No they should not be granted automatic citizenship! My Grandparents came to this country through Ellis Island! They Learned English and they took the Constitutional Test and they became proud Americans! It was good enough for the former generations and it is good enough for the illegals! If a person wants to be an American they need to take the test and swear allegiance to America!

No. There is nothing stopping them from becoming a naturalized citizen other than they have to go through the steps to do so. There are many permanent residents who have been here for a long time and prefer to not give up their native citizenship.

There is a process existing for those who wish to become citizens if they have been here legally for 5 years, 3 if they married an american citizen.
I think the process is a good thing, it's important to know what they ask for there if you wish to become a citizen, it's a good way to prove your English too. Citizenship should never be automatic when it comes to foreigners and I'm one myself.
