I'm participating in a charity drive soon to raise money for a children's hospital. I don't want people to feel pressured, but is that just an occupational hazard of raising money for charities.

No etiquette whatsoever, just ask. If you know it's a good cause, then don't you want to help your friends and family to participate in that goodness?

If you feel embarrassed by that, this is something about you personally, not charity. Do they not know how to say "no"? Are you afraid of uneasiness if they say "no"? Will they think bad of you either way? There are all sorts of questions you might worry about but no crystal ball to answer them. The only way to answer them is to ask, see what happens, and understand the process better from that. Experience is a good thing.
