AVI is a file container. It can support multiple codecs (DV, MPEG, Divx, etc.)

It claims it can play Divx, so it can probably play AVI divx files.
I doubt it supports AVi DV files or other older codecs.

Try installing VLC Media Player, it is the most reliable media player I have ever come across when it comes to playing movies. You might want to scan the movie for Trojans.
