I had my fuel pump replaced at a garage in town the pump was rusty and nasty they changed the pump and 20 miles later I had to bring it back to have all the lines tightened now they say the tank needs to be cleaned and I have to pay again to have the tank dropped again and have to pay to pull the tank again what does the ford manual say about replacing a fuel pump is the tank to be cleaned when the pump is replaced or not

Get the fuel filter changed. Sediment is heavy so it falls to the bottom of the tank. No need to drop the tank for cleaning, It's a ploy to get more money on a newer vehicle.

The Ford shop manual says nothing about cleaning the tank. But a rusty nasty fuel pump says bad gas and contaminated fuel system. A responsible technician would have stopped after seeing the pump and recommended a fuel system cleaning, including the tank, lines, injectors, and yes, a new fuel filter. Looks bad when it takes two or three visits for the proper repair to even be suggested. I would ask the owner of the garage to give you a break on the labor, since this should have been caught and fixed right the first time. A good idea is to add fuel stabilizer to your gas in any seasonal vehicle, or this could happen again!!

I agree 100% with bartzan but want to add that make sure they used a Ford fuel pump.. I've found on the new style pumps that Ford uses in the superduty trucks, that people who install just the pump from a aftermarket parts place will have issues with pickup afterwards of the fuel and will cause issues such as lack of power on acceleration etc...

But funny the lines had to be "retightened".... All are snap together fittings and no wrenches (except to remove the ring around the tank and the special fuel line clip tool) needed to remove and replace a Ford fuel pump....

What is the rated psi on the fuel pump? I've heard of fuel pumps that run at 7 psi which I would imagine you could hold back. If this is happening while coasting on the highway, I would check out your egr valve. It could be a MAF related issue also but if your egr sticks when your not on the gas it keeps pumping lots of exhaust gas in and can almost stall the vehicle. I think mine was causing problems like that and also made the car stutter under cold start up conditions. It just finally threw a code on me after a tune up no doubt. I've just manually worked mine around (don't touch when hot as exhaust gas flows through) and was able to clear the code but I may be taking it off to clean or replace soon if it keeps acting up. Good Luck!!!
