Do they sort out the prescriptions or do they give advice to the customers?

They sort out the medicines on the prescriptions - get the correct ones, count them out, label them etc. This is then checked by the pharmacist. If the pharmacist has done the counting/labelling etc the the dispenser will usually act as their cross-check since two people are more likely to spot mistakes than one.

They don't tend to give advice to patients as a dispensers very role is intended to free up the pharmacist's time to do just that.

Errm, a dispenser dispenses.

Sorry, seriously.

They sort out the prescriptions and can give some advice on trivial matters, medical or pharmaceutical advice should only be given by the qualified chemist.

they dispense the medicine; when you give in a prescription they will sort out how many of one type of drug you need, according to what your doctor has said, then they will 'dispense' that amount into a bottle, and label the bottle with how many and how often you take them.
