No!!! It's not normal, but it's common for boy (I don't know why) to start talking late. Here is my experience with my son : My son who is just 26 monts old wasn't talking at all & his dr. reffered him to speech therapies when he turned 24 months. Now, he is doing better. He started saying some words, some in Spanish and other in English. We are a bilingual family.

During this time, I have seem some many chidren (mostly boys) going into speech therapy, & they start talking in one or two months. Ask your Dr. for help. Private insurances and medicare pay these kind of treatment when Dr ask for it since this problem is considered "developmental disorder". Don't get afraid by this frase, your child may just be a late talker like my son, by as soon he gets help as soon he would start talking. And you would be a happier mom.... Sure about this...

I also registered my son in a day care (learning center), just part time since it's very expensive. The contact with other children also helps to develop his language.

Check on the child and family connections web site (http://www.childandfamilyconnections.org... Over there you can find information about child development. If you live in illinois you can also see were & who to contact if you think your son has missed a milestone. If you don't live in illinois I'm pretty sure you would find this kind of agencies in your state that can provide information. Those agencies also help financially if your family qualify for it (low income), if not, they provide parent with the information and sometimes work with your dr. & insurance company to provide the treatment your son needs...

Good luck

It depends. Are you a SAHM and so always been around him? Are you able to anticipate his needs and then give him what he wants before he asks for them? If so, step back a little bit and wait until he asks for things before you hand them over. It's okay for some people to not talk until they are between three and four, it shows that everyone really is different and that things will happen at different times, but they will happen. If you know that there is nothing wrong with his hearing, then it may just be a case of not interpreting everything for him, and stepping back a little.

Its not normal. Even at 2 there will often be intervention with a speech therapist. Early therapy can do a lot of good, so if there are worries, best to do some research and check with a pediatrician.

That depends on your definition of "talking". Some children will talk away but are very difficult to understand at that age. If the child is attempting to speak, makes direct eye contact with you, and is always curious about his/her surroundings, then I would not worry. If the child is not making any attempts at actually conversing with others or engaging in learning, then I would speak to your pediatrician.

I would consult your pediatrician. I think that the average is approx. 50 words by age 2. If there is no disability then my feeling is that they talk, walk, etc. when they are ready! My son never crawled. I was terrified that something was wrong. We have a wonderful Dr. and he reassured me that it will happen, eventually and that I was freaking myself out. He started walking at 14mo, and at 21mo you can't stop him he's so on the go.

I dont think so. My daughter has been talking since she was about 15 months old. Have their ears checked...usually when speech is delayed it is due to hearing problems. I would get it checked out by a dr asap!

Could be fine, but make sure you have regular hearing tests, and you might want to consult with a speech pathologist - check with your doctor.
