I am pregnant and will be having my baby hopefully in the next few weeks. I am having an at home child birth, with my husband as my coach. I really want him to read me scriptures while I'm in labor. How would I go about finding a bunch of scriptures that would fit this purpose? I may go crazy if I try highlighting specific verses in the Bible.... it would all be colored! Thanks in advance for your help.

Absolutely there will be a midwife there with me. And-the Bible is here so that we can go to Him when we are in pain....

I would strongly recomment the Shepherd's Psalm for beginners. It always soothes me. My son often recites it to me to help me when I'm having seizures, and believe it or not, it actually works. I guess, on some level, I hear him, and my body responds.
Of course, that's not going to carry you through the entire labor experience. I could probably recommend other scriptures for you, but you probably wouldn't remember them when the big moment comes.
If I were you, what I would do is get myself one of those five dollar gift Bibles from the dollar store, and highlight to my heart's content. Not only would it give you something constructive to do while you are waiting for D(elivery) day, but your hubby will have the assurance of knowing, while he worries about what is going on, that the passages he is reading are passages you chose beforehand. Reading these passages just might help him, too.
I am thrilled to hear about your anticipated new arrival. If you think about it, shoot me an email, and let me know when the joyous event takes place, so that I might thank God with you.
Love,
Deborah

Psalm 127:3 Behold, children are a gift of the Lord
The fruit of the womb is a reward.

Proverbs 18:10 The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
The righteous runs into is and is safe.

Romans 8:38-39
Proverbs 22:6
Psalm 139

I have a friend who is a Doula (one who helps and supports a mother during labor and delivery). She mentioned that she also prays for the baby during the labor and delivery process. I thought that is such a great idea, we usually pray for the Mom but it is often a stressful time for the baby as well.

Congratulations on your upcoming birth, blessings to you and your family.

Just a side note,
I had Christian music on while I was in labor, and there did come a point when it wasn't soothing me. So a heads up, let your husband know that besides reading scripture it is helpful just to have a hand to hold or someone to rub your back, or coach you on breathing. Reading scripture is a cool idea too, wish I had thought of it!

When I want scriptures that are 'grouped' as far as topic (encouraging, motherhood, etc) I have found that Touchpoints paperback books (groupings of scriptures by topics) are awesome. they are like $3.99 at a bible book store.

or, figure out what you want as your 'theme' for the scriptures... go to biblegateway.com and type in the main words of that theme in the keyword seach... and lots of scriptures will come up as including those words, etc. , you can even have your favorite translation of the bible and then print off those verses to have your own collection for that time.

congrats on the pregnancy, will pray that you have a good labor and easy delivery and most importantly, a healthy baby!! God Bless!

use the Internet- scriptures regarding the birth or babies. scriptures about pain or suffering scriptures about joy and announcements. look up; Scriptures and religious wording baby's birth announcements. example Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of the heavenly lights who does not change like shifting shadows. Read the others ones. I liked the religious quotes also.

First of all, why did you think this question would offend anyone?

Unless they are a squeamish prude who thinks babies fall out of trees.

Second, do you think your hubby will have the presence of mind to read to you during such a high strung time? Trust me, you have NO idea how YOU will be and what HE will be capable of as many men cannot handle it.

My suggestion is that you pre-record some verses YOU find calming along with some soothing inspirational music to play during the time. I think just being there, holding your hand and coaching you (if he is your birth partner) is already a lot on his plate.

It's probably a bit late to suggest this; but my wife and I used the Lamaze Method of Natural Childbirth for our second child. Even though her "labor" lasted 12 hours, she required no medicine for pain relief!

All of the serious and helpful answers that others have given sound like they are on the right track! Please forgive the jokers and jesters who gave *humorous* answers! God Bless you in the wonder and miracle of giving birth and in your upcoming EDC (Expected Date of Confinement)! (That *might* be an outdated term; but my wife is a BSN, RN, who has been an OBGYN Nursing Instructor in a three-year School of Nursing and a Clinical Instructor in OBGYN Nursing in a Two-year School of Nursing, so I just *had* to throw that in!)

Wow! That is an amazing idea! I wish I would have done that! Lets see, having done the labor thing 3 times, what would I have found comfort in..(uh-oh, the highlighter is empty!heehee)
Psalms 119: 73- Your hands made and formed me...
Psalms 136- His grace endures forever!
Congratulations! I pray God will ease your labor and give you comfort and peace!

Here is a link where you can type in a subject matter about the scriptures you want and type in the version of the bible you want. Then it gives you the verses with that word in it.Also, you can look up verses at this site.

http://www.biblegateway.com/usage/form/

birth:
A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death than the day of one's birth.

Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut the womb? saith thy God.

And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
There are many words you can type in and it gives you the scriptures. I typed in birth and found these.
