I hate people stopping by without calling. Life isn't like a TV sitcom! I love the coat trick though!

I would always prefer some advance notice, even if its just an hour.
That way I have time to do a quick tidy around the house, make sure the bathroom is clean, put some clean clothes on if I'm in my sloppy stuff, and put some goodies in the oven. (I keep a roll of biscuit dough in the freezer for occasions such as this. Simply cut off a few slices, whack onto a baking tray, and 10 mins later you have fresh biscuits.)
Also, I really am awful at turning people away - just can't do it. So, even if I am feeling grotty I will still sit and chat, even though I'm secretly wishing they would go away and die someplace.
Hope that helps...

I have nothing to hide from any of my friends, and if they decide to come around for a spur of the moment visit, it's very flattering, I'll let them in and make them welcome... at the same time, it's nice when people don't overstay their welcome too long. If I'm busy with something, I may just explain that I've no time to see them, or I'll let them in for a little while. Actually, I am a procrastinator at heart, and having friends drop by is just a great excuse to push on important projects...
It all depends of course, on whether these people are actually friends- it's not the same when some guy who reckons he's my friend pops out of nowhere and wants to stay for the afternoon. I'll let him in, but sort of hope that he'll move on quickly...
oh, all these thoughts mainly apply to my university days, when I actually lived close to people, and had neighbours... out here on the Fen, things are pretty barren :)

Depends on the day. I tend to slop around the house in my PJ's when I've got nothing to do, so if they cold-call they have to take me as they find me. I can't answer for the house not looking like a bombsite if they just turn up, as well.
But if it's someone I really like and consider a friend, they know me and it won't matter. If what I or my house look like matters a great deal, they're too houseproud to be my pal anyway.

I hate suprise visitors. I like to look reasonably dressed and not with the hoover out and a duster in my hand while the washing machine is on its last spin and the bins need emptying. I am not extremely houseproud but I like to have the place looking tidy. Also, people tend to turn up when I'm about to go out or I am sat watching a film I have been waiting weeks for.

It would depend on the friend. I have neighbors that are friends and we have an open door policy, If I am home, they are welcome. But if I haven't set that up with someone, they need to call because I may have other plans. There is one person that I won't even open the door to if they come by without calling first, but that is because they never leave at appropriate times, and I pretty much have to kick them out of my house. I have to prepare myself mentally when they stop by, so the heads up is necessary. lol

I prefer to know if people are coming, so I won't be in the middle of doing something else and therefore be distracted or too busy. Also, so I can look forward to their visit and think about what fun we'll have together.

I prefer to know when people come around but upon reflection some of the best times have been when they turned up out of the blue...

I really don't mind my friends coming without notice. They are my friends, and they are welcome in my home. But, if the person isn't my good friend, than I do mind. If I do need to go over to my friend's house for some reason, I would call ahed.

I don't prefer either. If I want to see a friend. I will go where he is. If I want to talk on the phone (which I never do) I will call HIM.
