Mixed martial arts has rules just like any other type of fighting and it favors certain strategies and types of fighting. While boxers spend all their time developing their hands to a very fine edge they have weaknesses. Mohammed Ali fought a Japanese fighter 30 years ago in a boxing ring in Japan. While no really telling blows were landed after the first round by Ali it was Ali that went to the hospital early the next morning with severe bruises and clotting of his legs. The other guy fought the rest of the fight from the ground and Ali could not reach him. A boxer is at a disadvantage in a wrestling match just as a wrestler is at a disadvantage in a boxing match and professional boxers would do well to stay out of the octagon unless they develop some additional skills. Many kick boxers have tried and failed at this and that is why you see them now developing their other skills like ground fighting, chokes and submission holds.

I remember years ago in Columbus, Georgia, a UFC was held and people were chanting "We want Tyson." Well, that sentiment has again resurfaced with Mayweather and his comments about UFC, and ultimately his chickensh*t duck and run manuever regarding Sean Shirk. Obviously, boxers would always have a "puncher's chance," but more often than not, one surely would have to side with the likes of Liddell, Ortiz, Feodor, or even new champ Matt Serra. And to be blunt, I'd rather be rocked by Mayweather than Liddell any day of the week, for the Iceman hits harder than many heavyweights!

Boxing and mix martial arts are 2 different sports! Boxers train to use only their hands and they only hit in front of the face and torso. MMA strike with feet, hands, elbows, knees, and heads and they strike everywhere.
Boxing and MMA are two different sports with very different rules!
It's like comparing soccer to football, they are different sports!
But what I want to know is 1) why are there no undefeated mma's and 2) why are their 40+ year old champions in MMA?
MMA is the only sport where an old man can be champion.

Mixed martial arts is a hybrid of boxing, wrestling, and many more martial arts, as such, logic dictates that several martial arts are more effective than just one in particular, since the part of it that works best is assimilated.
comment: MMA rules!

It depends on what you mean by better.
If you think MMA fighters hit harder or more cleanly than boxers, please jump off a bridge.
But overall, yes, I believe in a fight, MMA fighters are "better" in that they have the distinct advantage.
