Theme... what is she into... the adults will understand. My son's 1st b-day was Elmo and EVERYTHING was red! He loved it. And our family went in on the theme...
Cake... what ever theme you chose, for example Dora, instead of going to the grocery store and buying a cake there (can get expensive and the icing sometimes is not that good), do your own cake at home. Make a sheet cake and cover it w/white icing. Then get a Dora gift bag and cut out the design. Put the design on top of cake and put a border of accent color icing around the picture and sides of cake. Easy and Fast!

How about a pink Hawaiian theme. You know, hibiscus print. Really pretty. The bakery can make a pretty cake like that too. And since it's Spring you should be able to find invites and all the rest easily. Good luck. Have fun!

Who cares if it's mostly adults.... It's her first bday. Try to pick a theme that fits her personality. What does she like, dislike? She's a girl so if she doesn't have a taste for girly things yets she will soon. Pick a theme that you'll enjoy and I'm sure she'll be happy with it. As for the guests, they are there to celebrate, not critique! :) Don't worry!

You are right.....she's only 1. So, you can pick whatever you want. However, be in mind...she will see the video tape when she gets older...so don't do anything lame. ;) One thing you could do is pick a color instead of a theme. Or, have "color" be your theme. When my oldest turned 1 I used Red for her birthday party color theme. Red plates, balloons, writing on the cake, party streamers ect. I also made a red punch and dressed her in red with a red bow in her hair. It was sooooo cute. And, it looked GREAT on the video.
Just an idea. :) Congratulations.

Any guests (!) will have to bring an adult with themm. Make sure you have goodies suitable for both. The kids will want ice-cream - but ask if any of them has it allergies or milk intolerance. The adults will want snacks. Just make sure the kids are supervised at all times and keep glasses away from table edges... espeically if they are filled with colourful liqueurs. Pretend it's a picnic; why not get a shallow pool and let thekm splash away?

Colors! She doesn't know what Baby Einstein, Dora, Elmo, etc. is anyway.....use lots of girly colors or maybe rubber ducks...kind of like a baby shower theme as she's transitioning now from baby to toddler.

A fiesta!
Otherwise anything animals -based on one even, or farm.
At Michaels Crafts, I saw Martha Stewart Birthday Kits, like a monkey one, that looked kind of fun.
