Obviously you need your car fixed, and the light can come on for many, many reasons not just the oxygen sensors. This particular problem sounds like the VSS, or Vehicle Speed Sensor. They have had a history of problems on this model. The fix may require transmission work, however, if it is a stick shift. Good luck.

'97 is the first year for OBD II computers on vehicles, so turning the key off and on will not give a proper code. A malfunctioning speedometer will trigger the MIL. Hook up an OBD II code reader and you will get one (or more) of the following: P0500, P0501, P0502, or P0503. All these codes refer to a malfunctioning speed sensor.

Wow...mine did the same thing. Same year and everything. (Would never give a code...light was just on)

My problem with the connector on the whole piece in the back. I just changed out the speedometer (The whole unit..can't think of technical name...sorry) and everything worked as it should.

With mine I could press it down hard on top of the dash and the speedometer would start working again. Hope this helps.

Check the crank position sensor and camshaft sensor i had a 97 neon and you could drive it for 15-20 mins then it would kick and buck stall out. the speedo would stop working and the needle would bounce around i changed both at the same time and fixed the problem. might not be your issue but check it out.

Is it a digital speedometer? Or is it analog? Digital speedometers will fade out when the lights are on sometimes and it is a manufacturer defect. Analog speedometers shouldn't have anything to do with electricity and should be unaffected by your headlights.

Ok, an easy way to figure out the problem right now is to go out, take your key, and put it in the ignition, do not turn on the car. then, turn it to the on position, off position, on, off, on, and leave it there. then, watch where the service engine soon light comes on. after a couple of seconds, it will start to flash. count the number of flashes in each digit, for example, for a 12, it will flash once, then long pause, then twice. Do this, then let us know what codes came up.

Srvice Engine light on tells you to have oxygen sensors looked and cleaned or replaced. If they are bad, it will ruin your gas mileage.
