tramadol is an excellent pain medication (not an antidepressant). like other medications that are commonly thought of as people medications, tramadol can be safely given to dogs. it is a non addictive opiate and it starts working about an hour after given. i take it on occasion for knee pain and one of my dogs takes it on occasion for back pain. hope your little one starts feeling better soon. just remember rest is also the key to a speedy recovery.

I'm guessing it was prescribed for pain right?
It may have began as a human medicine but is gaining much use in the animal world and it is being found to have some of the least negative effects on other organs that pain medications can have.
Use it as prescribed and it will be fine.

I do not know this medication specifically but I know that there are many medications that are used for both humans and dogs. My mom's Akita was prescribed an antibiotic a few months ago which was the same one my mom had been given a few months before. It just cost her more.
If your vet prescribed it for your dog, then I'm sure it is safe. You should be able to trust your vet. If your still concerned call your vet or another one and ask if the medication is safe.
My puppy had an allergic reaction to his vaccinations and my vet told me to give him half of a children's benadryl tablet. Worked perfectly. Since he has the reaction to almost all vaccines, we give him half a tablet before we go to the appointment (on my vets recommendation).
So, it is not uncommon for a "human" medication to be prescribed for a dog.
Good luck.

I do not know about Tramadol, and I didn't check online. However, you can ask the Vet if cranberry juice is safe for dogs, as a supplement for UTI. Also, as about well-dissolved alka-selzer (plain, not cold formula !) for the same purpose. Don't give anything, unless the Vet says that it will NOT harm.

Tramadol Tydrochloride (Ultram) is a pain medication given to people and pets. It comes in oral or injection form. If your vet prescribed it, only give as directed. I believe this is also prescribed as an antidepressant. .

Oddly enough a friend of ours just got this prescription for himself.. He hurt his shoulder and needed the medication for severe pain.. It caused him too many reactions so he had to give it up and tell the dr to give him something else..
Why did you take the dog to the vet? For pain?

It was prescribed for me for pain once. They must give it to dogs too.
There are many drugs that are given to both people and dogs and cats. My sister and my cat were once taking the same blood pressure medication.

It's a very potent pain medication for humans. Is your dog in pain?
