I'm looking for an electric that I can use to play harder more edgy stuff, but I still want to be able to play contemporary stuff as well. Any suggestions?

Check out whats used at your local music store. Epiphone is good, also ibanez( would have to be used though) Les Paul is the best, but out of your price range by a long shot.

Epiphone Les Paul or SG. The Fender Standard Strat with a humbucker. Schecter Omen 6. Ibanez RG series. Check out musiciansfriend.com or americanmusical.com

Alvarez guitars are pretty good, but the acoustic electrics are a little extra. I have a really nice Ibanez acoustic electric that i got for $350 at Sam Ash, so id say go the extra mile and get a good one if your serious about playing
