get a doberman (not a mini)

Rotties are always the first choice for guard dogs, and do well at their job (but they can be big lugs with friends & fam)

German Shepherds are also excellent guards (as my huge male GSD can attest!) They are more trustworthy around kids, friends and family. They do not "create" problems by over reacting (if properly trained) but they have a keen sense when danger is around and will act accordingly.

Belgian Shepherds (similar to German Shepherds) also make excellent guardians.

Pit Bulls are fiercely loyal (as everyone knows) and can be good with children.

Some other breeds to consider are Dobermans, Akitas, Boxers, Giant & Standard Schnuazers, Bovier De Flanders, Chows (chows are excellent guards, I have owned them most of my life)

Whatever dog you choose.....please keep in mind it has more needs then simply "guarding" you and your property. A dog will be far more loyal to a caring & considerate owner then it will be with someone who simply uses it as needed....and then discards it by the wayside when it is no longer useful. Sadly, my current German Shepherd lived this life. All he was good for was "guarding' without any concerns as to his exercise needs & other proper care. He is now a cherished "pet" that is a FIERCE, loyal guardian....but not vicious. That is key....you want a protective not vicious dog.

The breed of dog does not matter so much as the training.

An untrained breed of any sort will NOT make a good guard dog. A good deterrent? Possibly. But definitly not a device you can count on to protect you in the face of danger.

I think using a dog as a source of protection is a terrible idea, but if you decide you must, choose the breed of dog you prefer, and have it trained for protection in accordance to police/military K-9 training.

Keep in mind that this training is vigirous and takes a high amount of time/effort.

Guard dogs are for professional trainers/handlers ONLY.

Since you're asking this quesiton, you are NOT a professional and will only end up in pain, sorrow and broke with the lawsuits and injuries brought about trying to train a dog to be a guard dog.

Do everyone on this forum a favor and buy an alarm system for your house - not a guard dog.

Most dogs will protect their property.
Some breeds are more territorial then others, and larger dogs are more intimidating then a small one.
Get a dog that is obedient and submissive to you and your family.
German Shepherds are good dogs and smart.

In response to the post above, and any others who name pit bulls (or any breed that falls under this umbrella term): pit bulls will protect their people using reasonable measures, but when it comes to property, they are worthless. They will growl at an intruder until he breaks in, then be happy to show him to the TV and jewels, tail wagging. Pit bulls act as more of a deterrent than anything else. In fact, pit bulls have one of the highest rates of dogknapping, because they are so friendly with people, even strangers, and allow themselves to be stolen out of their own yards!

Just an FYI.

Get an alarm system. Dogs are family member who will be there for you but if you want your home protected, buy an alarm. If you need protection yourself, maybe you should change your lifestyle and surround yourself with better people?

The fila, but it is an attack dog no special training needed unless you want them to be somewhat social.
