Why do people say "donate" instead of "sell"?

Actually, you can sell your blood. If you participate in partial blood donation program, where they will separate certain components of your blood and return you the rest, you can be compensated, sometimes upwards of several hundred dollars. (depending on what you donate and what blood type you are) These are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies.

But otherwise, you will no longer be compensated for blood donation.

Because it is no longer legal to "Buy" human blood products from a donor in the US. Since the advent of AIDS, you can no longer sell your blood. All donations have to be voluntary.
