I live in China, so I know what kinds of creams you're talking about. I'd avoid them if I were you, the 'gentle' ones have very little effect and the stronger ones do really nasty things to your skin. Sure, you'll look lighter for a while, but in the long run, you'll be aging your skin faster. There is no safe way to change the color of your skin, whether you want it lighter or darker.
I know on this side of the world fair skin is considered more attractive than dark skin, but remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And in this case, the beholder is YOU. If you believe you're beautiful, you will be. That's not just some stupid cliche, either, I've seen it. People who see themselves as beautiful are seen as beautiful by others, no matter what color their skin is.

Fairness creams?

why don't you try this instead..

Add two drops of olive oil and two or three drops of Indian saffron / Indian "kaha" into curd. Mix well. Apply daily all over your skin. Wait an hour and shower.

Hope it works.. This info is from a beautician.

You can use sunscreen. There are many Indian herbal brands available in Sri Lankan beauty supply stores.

I have brown skin and I love it.

But if you're very dark or have uneven skin tone and want to just lighten or even it out a bit - use Papaya soap. All natural, no harsh chemicals and will even remove blemishes. I have 3 cousins who have started using it and they sure have lighter, smoother skin. I was really impressed. And I know a fashion model who uses it to lighten her inner thighs ;) (She models swimsuits).

Good luck!
