I used concrete blocks and a piece of wood. The holes in the blocks give me nice little cubbies for things like a stapler...etc.

You can get a lap desk, like an old breakfast tray, that sits over your lap while you're in a chair or sofa

I've used a fold-up banquet table for over 10 years now. I love it. It's sturdy and the perfect size for me and it's a dream to move and there's plenty of leg room underneath. Good luck in your search :)
