OK...so there are times in a woman's cycle where she is much less fertile..CHOOSING to have sex at this time is STILL a choice NOT to conceive..it is still contraception isn't it?
A choice has been made to have sex at THAT TIME because there is less chance of a pregnancy.
Hypocritical?
The ONLY true contraception is not doing it at all!
Thankfully I am an aethist

Get the facts staight! Whether it works or not the rhythm method is not contraception. Contraception occurs when either the sperm or the egg are not allowed to fertilize by some form of artificial means. The rhythm method is a method of family planning that involves having not having sex only during the women's fertile time. This is usually 3 to 7 days out of a month. Even when a woman is irregular there are ways to know when she is ovulating--temperature etc. If you use the rythm method you are basically doing abstinence during the fertile time only.
This is the only method of Family planning the Roman Catholic Church allows.

Here is an excerpt from it--
"The Church does not oblige people to have as many children as possible, or to engage in sexual intercourse every time the wife appears to be fertile. She teaches that if the married spouses do have sexual union, that they do not deliberately attempt to negate the natural order that God established between the marital act and His power to create new life. Contraception, so to speak, slams the door in the face of God and encloses the married couple in a world that is deprived of important avenues to and therefore to sources of supernatural help. .."

First of all, Rhythm Method assumes to know when a woman's fertile period is by guesswork. If you are talking about sympto-thermal Natural Family Planning, not everyone uses it for religious reasons. For those who do, you obviously don't really understand why the Catholic Church finds it acceptable.

The Catholic Church does NOT teach that you can only have sex in order to procreate. Sex is seen as a renewal of the marriage covenant. So married couples are allowed to have sex at any time. Now the church teaches that you should not use any artificial means to prevent pregnancy or achieve pregnancy. However, couples are allowed to abstain from sexual activity to prevent or postpone pregnancy if there is a good reason.

The Church does encourage couples to evaluate whether they really have good and responsible reasons for avoiding pregnancy or selfish ones.

I don't expect you to agree with the Catholic Church. Feel free to be an atheist if that's what you believe (or don't as the case may be). I just don't understand why people feel the need to slam things that they don't really understand.

The anti-sex ideology comes straight from Paul and co, who believed that the world was going to end in their lifetimes and sex was a pointless distraction. It didn't, so they settled with sex for procreation only.

The Catholic Church really went to town with this idea. It only allows orgasm by full marital intercourse (accidents are allowed, but intentionally pulling out early isn't), so there aren't many options. Human nature being what it is, they had to come up with something.

Hypocritical, yes. But also pragmatic.

I have asked a question on that and asked why do they allow natural contraception but not artificial? They came up with responses that you have highlighted here. Deliberately missing the point and say when fertility is low it's OK but the fact is that is still trying to have sex for pleasure and trying to not get pregnant - it's still contreception. Hypocrites doesn't covet it,they have a pathetic get out out clause for everything!

Don`t quite know what you mean, but I do know that catholic priests are not allowed to get married.
In some, that leads to homosexuality, which is worst and probably still involves sex between two people, maybe more?
The catholic religion, like all religions, is totally swamped with rules and regulations made, not from their bibles, but from fanatical preachers who put their own interpretation on what their bible says, preaches it to their congregation and after several years it becomes the norm, as most religions have over the years. The myths, fables and many conjectures become true after hundreds of years.
It`s all a load of bunkum beleived by fools who cannot reason for themselves.

Yes, I agree. My flaws are now all grown up, but in the days when I still believed in the Church, I took the rhythm method seriously,; later i combined it with the Billings method, which is a pretty accurate way of gauging when ovulation occurs.

The Church liked to fool itself into believing that the rhythm method was acceptable because it is "natural" rather than "mechanical". But you are right - it all comes down to the same thing ...you are trying NOT to have a baby.

You are right when you say not to have sex at all but this is only the case outside of marriage. within marriage however we must always be open to the procreation of life and therefore use ethically acceptible periods to concieve. This however must not be used as an ongoing method of contraception but only in exceptional circumstances.

i think you have got it all wrong,im a catholic,i think thats the main religion that does not agree with birth control, because the catholic church does not agree with contraceptives the rythm method or(pulling it out)was suggested, everyone knows this does not really work, the catholic church believes that you should only have sex for procreation and not for self gratification,so maybe your choice to be an atheist is the right one for you, good luck
