What kind of hamster is it?
Roborovski's hamsters are very hard to handle, they will almost NEVER sit in your hands, but always run right out. It's not that they hate people, they're just very high strung and they tend to panic. This is a natural thing for them, it's just the way they are. They are a "look but don't touch" type of animal.
Any other species of hamster, I'd say it just wasn't socialized properly, like another poster said. With these hamsters, patience and gentleness is the key. With enough gentle handling, it should eventually calm down, although some never do (these are usually a result of bad breeding temperament-wise AND no socializiation when young).
Good luck

He probable reveals the wheel annoying, I guiltily admit throwing some issues @ my hamsters cage while he become workout on the wheel at 3 interior the morning, have you ever seen putting him interior the washing room @ night and closing the door so no cats or canines can get in? If the washing room is used for the animals have you ever theory some closet in yet another room with a extreme shelf and a door that the animals can't open and the hamster won't suffocate in? I doubt your boyfriend hates the hamster he's only grumpy reason he hasn't had any sleep and so he's taking it out on the hamster.

Some hamsters will go crazy and like a good run around if they are out of the cage, this is normal. Its whether or not he is biting you and showing signs of being scared ( squealing, grinding teeth, ears down flat ) that you have a problem, is he doing that also?
Make sure you handle him on a daily basis so he gets used to the contact between the two of you, you have to gain his trust. Also invest in a hamster exercise ball, he will really love zooming across the room in it.

Hamsters are known for taking treats and running. My daughters hamster runs around and out of her hands as well but it doesn't mean she hates her. Plus hamsters life span is only about two years and maybe its nearing its time so it doesn't want to be bothered with anyone.

If a hamster is not handled and socialized as a baby, many never become accustomed to people.
