Can you not think for yourselves?
Why would you take anything seriously from a 2000 year old book of fairy-tales?

People can believe whatever they want but it would be refreshing to get some intelligent, well thought out answers that come from personal experience/feelings and not continually taken from a book..a book that seems so dubious and quite frankly is a tad outdated given this is 2007 not the middle ages.

Your answer from 'SCHNED' had me thinking for a while! It struck me that all 'holy' books are some sort 'law' books for religious folk.
Another common point with this observation is, that the same as the majority of Holy books the law books have changed, the only exception I can think of is the Koran.
Something they don't have in common is the fact that we know who wrote the law books, and why the laws were changed, we (or perhaps I should say some of us) don't know who wrote these Holy books, and we dont know why they were edited and changed! I am not suggesting that the Koran was ever editedor changed, but I do question who wrote it?
These religious folk only have their holy books and their 'faith' to use as so called 'proof'! These holy books also provide them with a sort of guide on how to live their lives, not that many of them follow this guide.
Having answered your question , just by giving my opinion as an atheist, which is just as good or as bad as any religious opinion, let me just add this:-
I have been wondering for years now , what could possibly, (or even impossibly) happen that would ever make me believe there was or is God? I have tried every scenario, there is nothing at all that would ever make me believe!
Conversely there is no scenario that I could ever use to prove to a believer that there is in fact no God, and never has been.
I was at one time the same as you are now, my hackles used to rise as I read some answers in this particular section of yahoo, I collected quite a few violations for being silly enough to try and use logic.
As a conclusion to this little rant, and because it may be of some comfort to you, I have at least discovered that most atheists know more about any religion than those that say they are practising it. This is why they have 'leaders' and 'teachers', to try and ''prove to them that their particular religion is the only 'true' one!!

Of course we can think for ourselves. In fact, in this day and age you jolly well have to be able to think for yourself to be a Christian (or any other religion I guess) because everything we get shoved down our throats is totally not Christian (Jewish, Muslim etc).
As for the Bible being a book of fairy-tales, it can't be. Quite simply, no human being would ever have written a story (stories) like the Bible.
When someone tells a lie, they intend to be believed. Correct? So when people lie, they say something that they think people are going to believe. So the last thing you would write about would be a God who became man, was born to a virgin, did miracles, died, was dead for three days and then rose from the dead. Why? Because nobody is going to believe it.
Take the book of Luke, no human being could have written such a masterful forgery.
It is more logical to believe in Jesus (for whom there is more historical evidence than for Julius Caesar) and the crucifixion and resurrection, than to believe that someone managed to write the Bible from their imagination.
As for the Bible being 2000 years old, give or take, since when has age affected the truth and validity of something? Just because time goes on, does truth change? Of course it doesn't.
Now, to the point of Christians quoting the Bible all the time. The whole point of being a Christian is believing what the Bible tells us. Therefore, our opinons on a subject are going to be what the Bible says. If they weren't, we wouldn't be very good Christians would we? You can't believe the bits and pieces of your faith that suit you.
Please note that I have not quoted at all in this answer. And for the person who was trying to talk in 'Bible language', you seriously need to get your grammar sorted!

It is God's word and therefore the highest authority.
That you say you have read it and that your opinion is that it is fairy tales speaks volumes about you.
The evidence is so overwhelming how can you have missed it all?
Ignorance is a poor principle on which to make judgements.
If it is wilful it is inexcusable.
Since the only way to know God is through revelation and His word, thinking for yourself, as you put it, is utterly useless.
That you think the Bible is a 2000 year old book of fairy tales not only demonstrates your amazing ignorance of what it actually says but also amply shows your inability to think. It can only be dismissed as fairy tales without thought.
To give you but one example, there are hundreds of prohesies in the Bible written many years, sometimes thousands, before their perfect and detailed fulfillment. Since only God can know the future, that alone demands it be recognised as God's word. How come you missed all that?
Why should your or anybody's opinion be of any value?
Shouldn't facts and truth be the basis for judgements?
Is it not so elementary and so obvious that if the Bible is God's word, as it claims itself to be, that is why it is so freely quoted?

I'm an atheist but I still don't like what you're saying. People should be free to believe what they want if it makes them stronger, better people. The Bible is basically an intricate 'rules of life' book with stories trying to teach people good morals. You don't seem to have read the Bible. You should there are some good 'fairy-tales' in it and it might impart some wisdom on you.

I think that there is an assumption that whoever they are talking to also believes in the christian god and also believes that the bible is the word of god. What is frustrating is if you tell them that you don't believe there is a god and you don't care what the bible says, they keep quoting the bible. At that point, the proper discussion would be the basic "where did everything come from" discussion.

i'm christian, but i don't always quote the bible....when i do it's becaus that's what the question is about.Sometimes i do quote it when it has nothing to do with the converstation. The fact that we read the bible and use what it says doesn't mean we are lazy.It was made for us to follow it and use what it says. Our goal is to gain more people for GOD and using the bible is a perfect way to do it.Afterall why do you think GOD made the bible?????? Just so it can sit there????? Come on people you should really start thinkin, before you start judging people!

If you wish to present an argument for a particular case it is entirely valid to use relevant quotes to justify your case, whether this is in a court of law, answering a question on english lit or in theological debate. This however is only supplementary evidence and you should be able to argue your position in your own words. This demonstrates real understanding.

I do take the Bible seriouslly but I will not answer with quotes if I know the listener doesn't appreciate the Bible. Some Christians or "So-called" just don't get it. I call it the parrot syndrome.

Dear klop,
When one does a research paper he quotes references to substantiate the research. God is the author of the Bible, so there is no higher or better authority than God.
Do you see my point?
"And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
