There is no reason magnets on a metal cage would kill a rat. Unless the magnets covererd the entire surface of the cage, cutting off all the air, or blocked the rat's access to the food and water, there's no way they could harm the rats - they are just small magnets and could never create a magnetic field strong enough to do anything. Unless the rats tried eating or gnawing on the magnets, and the material made them sick, but that's pretty unlikely.
Whoever told you that is full of poop. Babies are fragile, and might have died no matter how well you took care of them.

Did your rats actually die? If so, I very much doubt it would be anything to do with the magnets, which are just metal. The only way I can possibly see magnets harming rodents is if they chewed them (birds and small mammals can suffer from metal toxicity), and even then I'd be surprised.

I would have to say no.
I mean if they ate it they may get sick, but really they are rodents and in the wild they would eat stuff like that and be fine.

The person just may not know why, and that is just the only reason they can come up with.

No thats not true, but rats can die of other various problems. One of my rats is sick right now. His name is oliver and over the past year we've taken him to the vet numerous times. I'm sorry to hear about your rats but they're not the best pets!
