Definitely do not upgrade your current bike. Bike technology has come a long way in 18 years and some of the newer parts might not even fit. The difference you would experience would be marginal as compared to a new bike,

I advise you not to upgrade your bike. 18 years have gone a long way, a lot of the parts now will not fit your bike. As for buying a new bike, it all depends what trails you want to ride. If you want to be an xc rider, you can go with a trek fuelX. If you are more a downhiller you can go with the trek reignX. If you want something more of in the middle try the giant trance.
These bike will range from 1 grand to 2 grand. But it will be worth it.
