Help the root canal absolutely killed me, had to have 7 shots of novacaine before i couldn't feel it. I went backk twice for the root canal because he didn't get all the roots at once. Now the temporary filling is coming out and he wants to put a post in it. I am also 5 months pregnant. Is this gonna hurt? if it does i don't think i can take any pain meds???Shouldn't he have done it all at once?????

you need to find a better dentist, one that isn't soaking you for money by charging you a fee everytime you come in for a procedure that should have been taken care of in two visits, one to make a casting for the crown and do the root canal, the second to fit the crown. He screwed up by putting in a filling, and now he wants to charge you even more by putting in a post when a crown should solve your problem.

It sounds like you had quite the infection when the root canal was started, which would be why you couldn't get numb. An abcess can actually neutralize the anesthetic, making it ineffective. In my office it is common practice to have a 2 appt root canal with that kind of tooth, to make sure that it is responding well to the therapy. A post is common and you shouldn't feel anymore than you would with a regular filling, especially if the root canal was done correctly. You will need a crown after a post and core build-up, so a person could end up with up to 5 appts total, depending on what your dentist is able to get done at each visit. It sounds like your dentist is keeping you on track, although always dbl check w/your OB/GYN on their protocol.

i've had two root canals done and here's how it should b done. first visit is when they drill a hole and kill the main nerve the pulp of it all. they put in a temp filling made of cotton and medicine. when you come back they will clear the roots of your tooth to get rid the nerves running thru it and will put a small rod in your tooth and fill it up with this rubber stuff i think. so then you have to come bk and get fitted for a crown and then you come back to get the crowns put in. it shouldn't hurt at all. the shots of novicaine can be considered the worse part, but i like it. does he know that you are pregnant? if he does then everything should be fine. but root canals are not done in one sitting it takes multiple visits. It sounds like you are ready for the second part of it. it won't hurt at all. you need the rod to stabilize the tooth and get the crown asap because there is no blood flow to the tooth once the root canal is done and it can make your tooth brittle and crack. If you tooth is infected the dentist CAN NOT do the root canal in one sitting which is probably why you have to keep going. it sounds like your dentist is doing what a dentist should. you can speak to your obgyn regarding the novicaine also.
