I've never understood why Microsoft and other browser companies want their browser to be dominant. How are they making money from this?

Microsoft spends a lot of money advertising and "improving" this product. In the end, there must be some money in return. Perhaps if their browser is #1 it gives them more control over how code is used on the web (like their .net) The result is that more companies will purchase Windows Server OS?

It has to do alot with the market share of the OS. When you have open source browsers taking market share, then you get people warmed up to the idea of using open source software for day to day things. Microsoft's biggest selling point is that it is so popular.

Microsoft does not earn money from IE. They earn money from the operating systems, office suite, servers and other major software. IE has been a core part of their operating systems wince Windows 98. You don't have to purchase IE anymore, you have to purchase the whole O/S and get the IE as a freebie. Secondly, a web browser is an essential software, all operating systems now ship with a default web browser -- and users take it for granted. It'd be useless for someone to spend money on an O/S that does not have built in browser and multimedia components.

The begining of this was with Netscape. Netscape was one of the first browser and they would charge to get the software, then because microsoft doesn't want any competition because if user use another product they will eventually merge to other programs and eventually to another operating system.
Just ask yourselve, why we have to pay for microsoft office if you can get openoffice for free and it;s really similar to microsoft office. Why we don't use Linux which is a lot less than windows and some version of linux are free.
Windows need from us that we only know to use there product only and the best way to do that is to give you software for free and charge a lot for the other one that you are already into it.
