Someone can have a condition for a long time & not get diagnosed until much later. So if that's what you mean, then YES.

But if you are refering to a child being normal until his teenage years & THEN developing some autistic type traits, then the answer is 'No". In such a case it would be a misdiagnosis to label the child autistic. I kind of suspect that is what happened with Cho, the killer at the VT massacre. He had a mental illness that was misdiagnosed, therefore, never treated. Very tragic.

People can be diagnosed with autism at any age. Being diagnosed just means some one finally looked at the symptoms and decided they were autistic. Autism is being diagnosed more frequently in wider age groups because they have widened the spectrum of what falls under autism.

By today's standards my mom could be autistic; amongst other things she gets upset if she put the carrots in the salad before the tomatoes.

I was 14 when I was dx'ed with Asperger's Syndrome. Autism/AS never goes away. I do know stories of some people as old as 41 getting dx'ed. Mostly because their child is dx'ed and they see it in themselves.
