I think the phrase is no man is an island. If you think about it an island is all by itself out in the water, and doesn't have any other land around it. Saying that no man is an island means that nobody can do everything all by themselves all the time, sometimes we need to lean on and rely on other people.

The saying "no man is an island" means that as a person you are truly never alone and by oneself. You cannot do whatever you like, there are rules that bind you. Granted you can disobey those rules but there are ramifications to those actions. You are part of a bigger community and even though we are individuals, there are certain behaviors and protocol expected of us by others.
