Hi, this is a question to Westie owners (or other terriers). We have a Westie who farts quite a bit, and sometimes has soft stole. He's 6 months old, and is a very active little guy, very. We know its his food (there was no farting prior to the food). We feed him Wellness fish and sweet potatoe formula (very good quality food).

Our breeder used to feed him Iams and we noticed a skin alergy, which is why we switched to good quality food. The skin alergy has almost fully disappeared but farts have appeared instead. What type of food do you other westie (terrier) owners feed your dogs? Please don't answer "he has parvo". He's, like i said, very active, does not vomit, does not always have soft stole, has all of his shots, and we have been to the vet twice before just in case. Plus, we know that westies and other terriers are very prone to food alergies--he fits the bill.

Thanks!

I have a Jack Russell Terrier and I feed her the Innova dry food. She is extremely active and does great on the food. Wellness is a great food too though so I'm nost sure what type of improvement there would be. I think California Natural is a good food also for allergies.

Does your dog gulp his food? This could be the cause and feeding him twice a day may help. I understand the skin allergy quandary and you may want to try something like Nature's Recipe Venison and rice. There is no wheat, corn or soy in the product and it is what I have fed my dogs (since two of the three had skin allergies). You can vary the food too, by sometimes getting the duck and potato blend or the rabbit blend.
Neither Nature's Recipe nor Wellness have been on recalls regarding melamine and are considered "safe" in that regard. Since any commercial food is made to last, you are not getting the freshness of home cooked. That is a possibility that could help your dog, provided you feed him the right foods. And it's not a bad idea considering all the recalls and that they continue.
In addition to the NR, our dogs get skin formulation 3V Caps which have Vit A, D and E as well as Omega 3 in it. This is available via a Vet.
Another option is a raw diet:

Our dogs skin and coats and overall health were the best on this raw diet, but our freezer space is small so it was hard to keep up with, having three sizeable dogs. One thing we noticed with the raw diet, was that all three dogs tolerated chicken well when it was fresh and raw, but they could not tolerate the chicken blends of dog food.

I have the solution for you!!! I have a Westie and this worked wonders for me.

Get your little chap onto Eukanuba as soon as possible. It's fantastic food, and is good for the skin, teeth and eyes too.

The wind problem will stop within an couple of days, and his stool will be firm and neat - and ususally limited to 1 or two per day.

As for his skin - he's a Westie, so your stuck with bad skin. But if you purchase a bottle of flax seed oil and fish oil you can keep it under control - he should have tblsp of each oil in his food each day.

For treats avoid the fun things you see in the supermarket - only give him Eukanuba treats of things you know are preservative free, like chicken necks or fresh crunchy vegetables like carrots - they love these things and they won't effect their senstive skin. Good luck.

put your westie on a holisitic food I think that you will find that the gas will be gone after a couple of day and the stools will improve . holisitic is the only way to go for dogs that have terrible gas and allergies . good luck and I hope I helped . I have mine on california naturals and it is excellent food .

Well it takes a while for any dog or puppy to get used to new food. Wait a little bit they will have soft stool for a week after new food. but gas and loose stool is another reason to have stool examined. Could be worms. Is its belly swollen?

Never know! Just check it out! call the vet.ask them questions.dont ever be affraid to ask questions.

Had to say it. Im asuming your a guy!
lol!

I have a terrier mix and she had gastrointestinal problems until I put her on Eukanuba Low Residue Kibble. I get it at my vet's office. It's also good for her teeth. Soft stool is probably from the vegetables in the food. It's like giving a dog bran, which can cause soft stools and gas! My dog isn't gassy at all since we put her on Eukanuba.

Your puppy should have had a his first set of shots at 6 wks of age then two weeks after that or depending on the vet and what they want to do for the vaccinations and when they should be done. Costs of vaccinations vary, it really depends on the vet you chose I would just call some vets to find out what they charge for vaccinations.

It might be a necessary evil. I believe that any kind of raw food like fish and vegetables will tend to cause gas.

I've found that a good middle-of-the-road food is Purina Beneful. They've got varying stages like Puppy, Healthy Radiance, etc. ...
