They were all in a "wooden home" for the last couple of days and last night she just took the babies out of their nest and made a new nest in her wheel-why? Her wheel is on top of the cage and up a spiral staircase, it is enclosed so the babies will never be able to get out of there. What is she doing? Thanks for your help, I wasn't prepared for the "guaranteed boy" hamster that I got from the pet store to suddenly switch sexes and reproduce!

she think that by placing the babies up higher potential "predators" won't get them.

I don't have much experience in this area, but my guess is if someone disturbed her wooden home, whether to clean the cage or peek at the babies, she probably felt there was too much traffic for a nursery, so decided to relocate to a less hectic neighborhood. Second option: maybe the nest was too dirty, so she moved to a cleaner space. Hamsters are more fastidious than you might think! Is she sharing the cage with another hamster? If so, she's trying to protect her babies from being killed. I have heard that can happen. Remove the other hamsters until the babies are older. Those are my best ideas. Good luck!

animals are peculiar creatures. they do things we don't understand sometimes. and may be she does not want the babies to get out right now. if she put them in there she can take them out. but the main thing to worry about is if she is taking care of them or not. if she is not feeding them and nursing them, then you have a problem. otherwise i would just monitor the babies. if need be, you can detach the cage and get the babies out.

and as far as the sex goes, i got 2 rabbits and thought my girl was a boy for the longest as well. and she had 3 different litters of kits and did not take care of them. i had to buy formula and lay her down so the babies could nurse. they grew to be healthy (and fat), but at least you hamster Mommy is taking care of her babies.

this is becauuse she is nervous and wants to get them out of reach. trust me if she can get back and forth the babies will in just a few weeks.
try to leave her alone as much as possible if she gets to nervous I hate to say she may kill and even eat all the babies.
You do need to get them seperated at 4-5 weeks old as they can start breeding at 7-8 weeks.

you can give her wheat germ this will help her with extra fiber. Also give her vanilla yougurt ( 1.4) teaspoon every other day for extra dairy and for helping to prevent wet tail.
make sure she has something to chew on I find dog biscuits are good they caneat and keep their teeth filed down as their teeth never stop growing

It seems strange to you, but to her it makes perfect sense. She is moving them as high as possible as she feels they are safer there. Leave them be for now though, if she feels her babys are under threat she will eat them. It sounds terrible, but thats what hamsters do.

u have a critter trail? that is not good to have babies in, she might think that,...don't know if u have other hamsters too but... in that case she might b trying to protect them, or, when hamsters nest they usually sleep in gets too dirty they move.

My hampster did that, too. To protect her babies. Don't try to touch them - because the mother will kill them. I made that mistake when I was little - I wanted to touch one of the hampsters - and the mother 'shunned' the baby (luckily not killing it) for the longest time. Luckily it was healthy - and fended for itself.
Good luck.

Your hamster is trying to protect her young. If you touch them, then she'll eat them. Don"t touch her babies, don't try and move them. And MOST IMPORTANTLY: KEEP HER FEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not joking, she'll eat your babies so fast if she gets hungry, you won't know what happened to them!!
