I know that there have been two major millenialist movements,
not coincidentally, around the two millenia since Christ's life. Why? A thousand years must seem like a lot of time for simple people (it's actually not so long if you consider generations linearly).

The first thousandth birthday of Christ had all the real earmarks of doom-times. Plague was rampant in Europe and there was a great deal of strange and violent weather happening. This was a period of the stirrings of urban capital civilization, so cities were crowded, and wood smoke choked the air over the densely populated continents of Europe and Asia. Look at the paintings of Bosch and Breugal to get a feeling for what I'm saying here.

There was a good deal of this kind of millenialism attending the beginnings of the industrial revolution. In fact the current Rapturist movement has its roots in the late 18th century. This
has come to a head among current Fundamentalist Christians, and it's easy to understand, whether or not one approves of such smarmy religious negativism.

Links and evidence? Read some history books. This is all rather common knowledge.

Personally, I accept the philosophical teachings of Christ and reject the religious magick left over from the Old Testament.
Makes me an Atheist Christian... how peculiar.

Well I'm not an atheist, but I do have atheist friends. Most of the time I think its neither. I don't think they really want you to burn in hell but I don't think they have a genuine concern for you, either. They are doing what they were told they are supposed to do. They think that will give them brownie points with God. What they don't realize is that the church is a business. A money-making business. Of course they want to recruit as many donating members as possible. And the best way to do it is to convince Christians that there will be dire consequences if they don't help (and that it is their duty, as good Christians, to "save the heathens from the burning pits of hell"). Its a great sales pitch, but that is just what it is. Some people just don't know they're contributing to it

Too many times to count, I remember the first time, when I was in 8th grade about 100 years ago the Xians were claiming the world would end.

From what I have read here, they are predicting 07/07/07 now. To me, it's just a great day to play 777 on the daily numbers.

Relax, nothing is ending anytime soon. Although the Doomsdayists would like you to think so! LOL

Enjoy your day (it could be our last!)

Maybe Christians would count the Noah's flood thing to be an 'end,' but other than that, they don't believe the world has ended in the past, I don't think.

A future (at least in the future at the time of prediction) "end of the world" has been predicted at least 64 times. They're always wrong, and anyone in their right mind expects this to continue to be the case. Check my source for details on those 64.

Jesus said he'd be back during the lives of his apostles so I guess it ended almost 2000 years ago.

Jehovah's witnesses are actually the best doomsdayers.
