They don't all generalize
The ones who do, do it because they are taught religion in a very black and white way, IE good/evil, God/Devil so they learn that everything is one way or another around them. Despite this the world is not like this there are Grey areas everywhere. SO when we hear them talk like this it sounds strange to us. However, they are just speaking in a way that seems natural to them.
Some times atheist can do this, for example saying that ' all religion is useless' when this is clearly not he case, religious beliefs can drive people to help others, but can sometimes lead people astray by teaching them to blindly follow a book of rules and ideas.

He he, the question in itself is a generalization. How ironic.
As for your second question...just ask. That's what I've been doing, to try to understand other perspectives. There are so many different kinds of atheist, no two atheists seem to be the same...at least, not on here.
