I wouldn't say it's necessary, but it sure is a good preventative measure. Sunscreen is not full-proof, and just a couple days ago there was a headline right here on Yahoo! where scientists warn to not count on sunscreen to totally prevent cancer. By all truth and consequence, the only way prevent harmful sun exposure is to stay indoors, and that's not exactly feasible, unless you're a recluse. But it's definitely worth putting on if you plan to spend more than an hour or two outside.

It is VERY necessary to wear sunscreen. It doesn't matter what kind of skin you have, there is always a possibility of burning. You have a high risk of getting skin cancer. Any change of skin pigment could be a sign of skin cancer. Even tanning. So always wear sunscreen that protects you from every kind of the sun's rays and has a high spf.

You need to build a tan to keep from over exposing. Using a SPF of 15 is good when you are going to be outside all day. At noon the bad UV rays (UVB UVC) are at the highest level of penetrating the earths atmosphere. UVC causes cancer, you need a little UVB to make melanin and Vitamin D in your body. Melanin is your bodies wall of defense against the harmful rays. You need UVA rays to turn the melanin brown in order for it to protect. Do your best not to sunburn. Sunburn kills your skin cells and destroys the melanin wall your body is trying to build up for protection. Try staying in the shade between the worst hours 12-3. Using a sun block with a high SPF all the time will increase your chances of burning hence breaking down your protection. Gradually build a tan and you are less likely to burn and cause damage! PS: All of the hoop la about staying indoors and avoiding the sun is an economic scheme by advertising, cosmetics companies, and dermatologist. They make money by making products and ads to make you avoid the sun. The sun and knowledge of it is free. In the USA 95% of us are Vitamin D deficient. Best way to get Vitamin D is the sun or you can drink 2 gallons of Vitamin D milk a day plus take a supplement! Think about it why do some derms. send people to the tanning beds to clear up skin conditions (acne, eczema) if it will kill you!!

I read that 80% of sun damage occurs before the age of 20 - as in, the damage that causes both wrinkles and skin cancer. If you're going to the beach or know that you will be out in the sun for longer than 20-30 minutes, then definitely wear it to prevent burning. Otherwise, don't worry too much about wearing it every day. It's honestly too late (unless, of course, you're a teenager!)

When I go to the beach, I wear a t-shirt and usually stay only for 1 -2 hours. I take the t-shirt only of for 20 - 30 minutes to swim or so.

YES! A friend of mine was VERY lucky that her doctor found her skin cancer in time...she had the deadly one and she had two young kids at the time. People with fair skin are more susceptible to skin cancer than people with darker skin, but it is still a danger to everyone.
