Henry's early years were marked by prosperity, and he established many religious houses for nuns and monks. He also set in motion many constitutional and legal reforms.

Some of the reforms came at odds with the Church, however, and Henry was torn in some aspects about what was good for England and what was good for the Church and wellbeing of men's souls.

During this political turmoil, the Archbishop Thomas of Canturbery (later a saint) worked to enact reforms that would honor the Church and England. After Saint Thomas was brutally murdered by the enemies of the Church, King Henry showed great remorse and did penance in bare feet at the saints shrine.

Later in his life, however, he became bitter and vindictive. This was probably due to the rebellion and misconduct of his sons against him. He imprisoned his wife because of strong suspicions that she had incited his own children against him.

King Henry did receive the Last Rites (forgivness of sins and Holy Communion) just before his death.

He reformed English law but other than that he was too busy defending his territories in France to do anything of much good. He imprisoned his wife for rebelling against him and supporting his sons instead of him which counts as a pretty nasty deed.
