I think when a deity decides to smote another creature, it is a little like using a nuke to take out an anthill. You just really can't control the all mighty's power that well so it results in a lot of collateral damage. This is unfortunate, but in the interest of bringing peace, freedom and democracy to the world, there is no realistic way to avoid it.
