It's absolutely fine. At night, I would stay on the beaten path, but during the day take the time to explore. I have lived in Harlem, and never had any problem day or night.

Harlem has a bad wrap because of the crime that was rampant in the late 80's, but lets remember all of NYC was riddled with crime there. It stood out because it is traditionally it has African-American and Hispanic neighborhoods. It's another sign of bigotry in the US.

Theres nothing wrong with Harlem. I lived there for 21 years, its not 100% safe but where in the world is it 100% safe to walk around at any given time of the day??

I think you are living with an old stereotype of Harlem. Let's put it this way - the homes/apartments in Harlem are completely unaffordable to the vast majority of Americans these days. It is a thriving residential neighborhood with lots of great restaurants, clubs and shops. It has Starbucks, etc...just like where you live (not that that's a good thing, but still...)

You have nothing to worry about to walk there, especially in the day time. At night, you'd want to be just as cautious as you would be in any other neighborhood in NYC.

The practice would not stay long on the station, so be waiting to get off as quickly because of the fact the doors open. you would be superb mid afternoon like that yet a pair of caveats: cover up rather or you ought to ask undesired interest. stroll alongside one hundred and twenty 5th highway particularly than 124th so some distance as you are able to. that's an extremely bright strip and is often nicely patrolled.

I agree with whats already been posted. The truth is that Harlem is quite different than it used to be. The average American couldn't afford to live in Harlem anymore.

While no place is 100% completely safe, it's much better than you're expecting.

Harlem has really changed in recent years. It is absolutely safe and there are quite a few interesting places to visit.

Yes, silly question - as safe as anywhere else in the world today!! So much so that many buppies are moving in due to affordable prices, it has been dubbed (a part of it anyway) as "lower manhattan." It is a hot commodity this day, great places to eat and lots of history.

During the day it's not too bad, the crime in the neighborhood has gone down a lot and it's really a decent neighborhood. Crime can happen anywhere.
