interview the 1st week due to people out of the office. I emailed early last week to see what the status was & I got a sort of abrupt resonse that she, recruiter, didn't know because she was very busy? Since then I have heard nothing. Should I assume that it's no longer an option or should I confirm that with her?

I work in oil & gas so I can assure that co.'s are not putting the brakes on hiring for the most part. Quite the opposite as they are desperate for qualified people.

Sounds typical. It happens with a lot of companies. They expect professionalism out of the people they're "recruiting" yet they lack it in a big way. Of course sometimes things do happen that distract them and you just have to give them time.

I heard a saying the other day that might help you...
Sometimes God shuts the door, but sometimes he just wants you to wait in the hallway for a little bit.

Did you send a thank you letter? Maybe you should do that as well- another way to convey your interest in the job. Good for calling them and letting them know you're still interested. 3 weeks is a long time, but doesn't sound ridiculous. If the position was filled they would have just told you. Send a thank you letter, and just keep contacting once a week to show that you are really interested- it may just give you the edge!

Typical recruiter.

Do you know the name of the company, or can you search on Monster and your local classifieds to try and find the company yourself?

My guess would be that the specs of the position changed after the recruiter called you and instead of leveling with you, she is pulling bs and stringing you along just in case another job comes open.

Plus, the economy is crashing and many companies are putting their hiring plans on hiatus waiting to see what business is doing.

Move along and find another recruiter (if you think you need one), this one has proved that she doesn't care about her candidates. Find one that does.
