The composition of surgical suture material, or stitches, varies in order to accommodate what the suture is being used for and if absorption is necessary or if they will be removed.

Absorbable sutures, or catgut, is made from the intestines of sheep.

Regular, or non-absorbable sutures, can be made from silk (most common), nylon, polypropylene or polyester. There are also steel sutures, made from stainless steel wires. These are used in bone surgery (orthopedic) or in heart surgery (to close the sternum).

Sutures also come in various thicknesses (sizes). Very fine sutures are used for cosmetic surgery all the way to very heavy sutures for bone surgery.
