A protein shake, along with some Creatine and some carbs.
Make sure that the protein is Whey; Whey protein has a better absorption rate than other types of protein.
A meal, even a light one, takes several hours to digest, and your body needs nutrients immediately after a workout; a shake resolves this problem. Your body needs that protein as you work out as well, so many people have a shake before so that the protein will be available while working out, and then another one after.

Don't forget to replenish your carbs after as well. Most protein drinks are low in carbs so you'll have to add something, like a fruit drink, or find a protein drink that has an ample amount of carbs.

Quite a few studies have been done on the effects of Creatine and muscles and it seems to be pretty well established as an aid. If you decide to add it, take about 5 grams a day along with a carbohydrate; carbs enhance the effect. Also, do not take it around any caffeine; caffeine interferes with Creatine absorption. I think that it's a good idea to cycle any additives, like Creatine; that is, do a month on and then a month off, or use it on workout days but not on rest days, just to give your system some time off and be extra safe.

Real food is always better , some complex carbs and protein but it is not always the most convenient. Just remember whether is food or shake get something with protein in your stomach at least 20 minutes after a work out. It depends on what type of athlete you are?

Actually, neither. Food or protein should be taken a couple of hours BEFORE a workout if you wish to obtain the best results from the intake of nutrients. The best thing for AFTER a workout would be a beverage to replace electrolytes and water. Gatoraide is one of these, but there are many others.

I think a protein shake. It will help your muscles rebuild themselves better. But, you could also have a high protein meal. but a shake would have less calories then a whole meal.

Post-workout you need to mainly focus on replacing carbohydrates, not protein. Your body does not use protein for energy (under most circumstances). Your body uses carbohydrates as its primary fuel source, then fats. Since we have enough fat in our bodies, we need to focus on replacing the carbohydrates after each workout. You do deplete your carbohydrate stores.
So after your workout, you can have a light snack, or about 1.5 hours after have a meal.
