Does one look at this from a purely scientific standpoint or a spiritual one, or both?

I think it is both. I don't know too much about the scientific aspect but i think emotions come from inside, from the heart.

We suddenly feel a wave of nostalgea, of sadness and joy. it comes directly from the heart -because it is the heart that feels the blow first. When you get a dreadful shock doen't your heart thump fast? This is because it is the first to react. the mind comes second-that's what i think! i may be wrong of course, but you asked and i answer!

Emotions are something most people believe only humans have, so your question is a good one. If 'only humans' have 'emotions' then we must at least consider that God could have given them to us for a reason ... but they 'come from' our 'minds' through 'nurture' ... the way we are raised when we are infants. That is a 'scientific fact' that can be 'proven' through research ... although I think that the 'idea' of 'abusing' x number of children to get someone who could grow up to be a mass murderer is 'so totally wrong' that it violates 'spiritual rules' about how we treat other humans. Some people would 'disagree' with me ... they may say that you 'just can't test' for things like 'murder', while others may say that it could 'advance mental health' if we did that testing. Again, that's a 'spiritual basis' for choice ...

Both.

Emotions come from the center of the mind.

The mind resides in the brain.

The brain is the hardware, the mind is the software.

I never thought of emotions and religon being linked. Emotions (to the best of my knowlegde) are just the brain reacting to different situations and finding a universal way for the message to be conveyed, i.e smile means happy or pleased to everyone, frown means unhappy about something.

Emotions are caused by chemicals within the brain. I guarantee you that if you take drugs that alter these physical entities, you'll "feel" differently.

Emotions come from an evolutionarily wired neurology and neurochemistry.

Purely scientific.
