there is only one brand - sony, and it's function is to play video games on your television.

sony owns the system, and has made three different "generations" - that is, there are 3 different consoles.

regular ps is kinda hard to find, and the games are as well, so that's not a go

ps2 is currently out, costs $120 [new] (and another 20 for a memory card) and games range from about $6 - $50. also, it plays DVD movies

ps3 is the newest system, costs hundreds of dollars, and really isn't what you're looking to spend on a ten year old boy. honestly the system is for older folk than 10..

A playstation is a video game console. It currently has three different "generations" in production.

the original Playstation - may be hard to find games except used (Ebay) and in stores that sell used games. Still has playability and a customer following

The playstation 2 - Obviously next in line.. plays games a bit faster/better graphics. Still the same hook-ups (to basically any TV) that the original game system had. More games available (hundreds if not thousands to choose from) and easy to find. Very cheap at this point as the newer system is now available. Comes with the ability to play standard DVD movies also.

The playstation 3 - The "new" system that runs about $500-600. Not many games out for it yet, but the graphics are incomparable to any other system on the market right now. Very new technology and comes with a blue-ray player (new type of high quality movie), wireless technology and the ability to connect to the internet to download games, etc.

As far as what I'd get for my 10 year old? I'd go with the playstation 2.. the games are cheap and readily available. You can pick up a system used for under $100 and games as cheap as $5.00. Definitely the way to go.

Playstation is a video game system. If you have ever heard of the Atari or Nintendo Entertainment System it runs along the same lines. There are two versions of the Playstation out now. PS2 and the PS3. Sony is currently fazing out the PS2 for the PS3. The PS2 will run you around $150 with accessories like memory card. The PS3 will run anywhere between $600-$800 depending which model you buy.

well as for tha playstation theres 3 different brands and all of them are avaiable at certain and/or at tha same areas/stores... like for instance if ur lookin for a simple playstation 1 it runs about 19.99(without tax) or u can get those cheaper at pawnshops... a playstation 2 is more advancec with better games that runs about 49.99(without tax) and u can get that cheaper at a pawnshop too... and for a ps3 its tha most recent system that came out and its about 599.99 to 699.99 depending on which one u get because they got 2 version (20Gig and 60Gig) thats tha most expensive one if ur lookin for somethin that would be good for ur child it would be best to get a ps2 for tha fact that they got good games, don't have to worry about spending too much on games... it's less likely to break or damage ur ps2...and u can use ur ps2 to play ps1 games which iz a good thing...tha ps3 can do tha same cuz it can play ps1 and ps2 games but az far az ps1 games its only a certain kinds that will play good...

so bottom line tha best bet to get would be a playstation 2 its fun for everyone got great games for ur child and its good price too...but if u do plan on gettin a ps2 get tha original one not that skinny slim system cuz they tend to overheat alot
