Obviously, they see many many more cases of cancer than the average person. Hundreds or thousands more. Do they become numb to it and accept their inevitable fate? Do they repress a growing and overwhelming fear? Are they optimistic that they are helping to eradicate cancer once and for all - and that is where they put heir energy instead of fear?

They throw the switch when they go to work. To them Humans are just another case of cancer to be treated or cured. My late Fathers Oncologist, well went to out-patients, walked into his office and said 'Who is smoking in here?' After sending my Father for blood tests he called me back and said 'I was smoking' I am stunned. Since then 1989 I have seen him once and he has put on a large amount of weight so I just had to ask. 'Well it does not look right for a oncologist to die from Cancer, so I gave up smoking. Now I am heading for a heart attack, but that is the Cardiologists problem!' The Doctor who did my bone marrow biopsy had leukemia himself and my primary Doc had a big benign tumor removed from his face, he was 'scared' and no longer a Doc. Saw what us Patients go through. My Niece is a radiologist, operates the radiotherapy machines.
They are all normal Humans and know they can succumb to Cancer just like their next door neighbor as Cancer knows no bounds. They like everyone sit back and say 'It will never happen to me!'

Like any medical professional you have to have some kind of barrier that you use as a safe place for yourself. You are involved with the patients care but,you have to not get to involved in thier personal lives.I will admit that every little ache or pain I have ,it goes through my mind this could be cancer. There are many cancers that are being cured and it is a great feeling to know you can help someone.Like someone said earlier, the treatments can be worse than the cancer. Many patients who are in this postion only do the treatments for the family.I always try to use hospice as necessary. Its easier than going through weeks of treatment then dying.

I don't know..I'm not a doctor but I;ve talked to a few oncologists and general MDs..always wondered what made them choose oncology (thank God there are such angels that do)..maybe they had someone in the family?

In regards to treatment when stats are against you..man, miracles happen. Seriously, no matter how dark and scary, if there's a chance, why not take it. Maybe that's God's plan, to put you to trial and help you through IF you take the chance.

I've been watching a lot of "Medical Incredible," a wonderful show on Discovery Health Channel...there are cases sooooo strange, sooo improbable! Doctors told families there was no chance yet people lived.

I would think, as with most physicians, one has to detach to do an objective job of road mapping the best course of treatment for the specific cancer they are treating. I like your question though, and would further ask if they would be more prone to not have as much treatment ( radiation, chemo, etc) knowing the statistics as well as they do. I believe that many people unnecessarily spend the final years and months of their lives in misery from treatment that is not successful but is given because that is the job of the oncologists! And sometimes it is the treatment that is cause of death, not the cancer.
