And if it can be stolen, how can it be restored? Does anyone else see the silliness in these expressions? I think it is the integrity of the English language that's being stolen. I'm "efforting" a correction? I'm "greenlighting" actions to prevent it? Help!

Of course you are still you - but someone is pretending to be you - and ruining your life in the process by ruining your credit, even committing serious/violent crimes - all under YOUR name.

So, after you find out that you're wanted in 6 states and 4 countries for crimes you didn't commit, it's up to YOU to prove that you are indeed you - and not this criminal who is merely pretending to be you.

It takes a lot of effort - money, time, and police work to get your ID back once it's stolen. We're talking years.

ID Theft is no joke.

Yes, you are still you but if someone gets your credit card number, social security number etc., then they can become you - at least as far as merchants and the government is concerned. That is why they call it "Identity Theft"

Can you get it back and become the one and only you? Yes, but it takes a lot of work. You have to get new credit cards, contact the police and hope they can catch the "other you(s), change bank account numbers and anything else that makes you - you - to the rest of the world. You have to work with credit agencies to make sure that your credit history wasn't compromised.

If you don't think it should be called Identity theft, then what would you call it?
