At first it was just called the Christian church or "the Church". Ignatius of Antioch used the Greek word for universal - katholicos - to describe it. The reason he did so was not necessarily to describe the Church, but to describe the new and everlasting covenant. The old covenant was with the nation of Israel, now the new covenant was with all of humanity - therefore it was universal. Thus came the usage of the word universal, or katholicos, or as we know it catholic.

It wasn't until churches started to break up that different names started to appear, i.e. Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Church of England, etc.

Jesus never started a church, He went away to start a family with a wife (Woman/Church/Israel/Bride). No, Jesus never sinned like man has sinned. Read the book of acts for the beginnings of the mans material church.
